To obtain sense pleasures we spend away our riches, because we value this experience of pleasure more than the possession of material wealth. We are so driven by these desires, running after these sense pleasures that we forget that there exists an entity even greater than our gross body. In reality Atman (soul) is even greater, more special than our body. When compared to the bliss we can experience in our soul all other sense pleasures appear inferior and trivial.
In our day-to-day life we follow the motto of - "give up as little as possible and get as much as possible", but when presented with the ultimate test, we abandon it. We are ready to give up our hard earned wealth when it is for the sake of sense pleasures, but we hesitate to give up our sense pleasures (which are little things) for the bliss of our soul (which is the greatest joy there is) - This is MAYA.
It is a well established fact that any one can obtain wealth, amass material possessions, give the senses some temporary satisfaction by indulging in tyranny, immorality, selfishness, oppression, adultery, theft, violence, deceit, arrogance, hypocrisy, lies, ego, etc. But one can never taste the bliss of self-satisfaction this way.
